Stories behind the statistics

Since 2014, RefuGeek has trained 327 students across multiple cohorts, teaching digital literacy, web development, marketing, and AI skills to refugees and asylum seekers in Hong Kong. Some graduates have gone on to build remarkable careers internationally. Others have found local employment while their asylum cases are processed.

Where we share individual stories, we do so with permission. Where we don't name people, that's a deliberate choice: their right to privacy matters more than our right to claim credit.

Refugeek 102 Graduate, 2014 Cohort

From our programme to Vice President at a global bank

Siva joined RefuGeek in 2014 as an asylum seeker from Sri Lanka. After completing the programme, he went on to build a career in cloud infrastructure, DevOps, and systems integration. He is now Vice President and DevOps Lead at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in the United States, overseeing enterprise-scale deployment, configuration management, and application infrastructure.

Refugeek 102 Graduate, 2016 Cohort

From Hong Kong to a senior ecommerce career

Sam graduated from RefuGeek 102 in 2016 while living in Hong Kong as an asylum seeker from Somalia. He went on to work as an instructor and content developer in the tech education sector, before building a career in ecommerce. He is now Senior Manager of Ecommerce at Home Health Store, leading operations across marketing, customer service, and logistics — and has also served as a lead instructor for a national digital literacy programme, teaching thousands of learners.

Refugeek 102 Graduate, 2017 Cohort

From student to Education Programme Manager

Aliou arrived in Hong Kong from the Central African Republic and completed RefuGeek 102 in 2017. He went on to build a career in education and community development, and is now Education Programme Manager at Christian Action — one of RefuGeek's own founding partners. His journey from student to programme leader reflects exactly the kind of trajectory RefuGeek exists to create.

2024 Cohort

Recent graduates entering employment

Our most recent cohorts have seen graduates move into employment across hospitality, education, administration, and professional services in Hong Kong. Recent graduate placements include reception roles at Eaton and the YMCA, an assistant programmes position at Kellett School, and data entry roles. Several graduates from 2024 and 2025 cohorts have also been resettled internationally to Canada and elsewhere, taking their digital skills with them.
